When the wind is about to blow...

Frankly speaking, i was having a big problem on recognizing things that looked similar when i was young, so i cant differentiate between turtle and tortoise. They both belong to the same family of reptiles called Testudines!

I still remembered my dad brought me to zoo and I literally looked at a tortoise but shouted out loud saying :" Pa, next time we need no travel to Terengganu to look for turtle, we can come to zoo!"

And, the awkward moment slices in the atmosphere...

Trust me, I'm assure you that at least more than 50% of the people out there could not recognize them as well, but no worries, it is always good to learn new things in your life. Let me share some interesting facts about them!

DID YOU KNOW?

  • Turtles have been on the earth for more than 200 million years. They evolved before mammals, birds, crocodiles, snakes and even lizards.
  • The earliest turtles had teeth and could not retract their heads, but other than this, modern turtles are very similar to their original ancestors.
  • The shell of a turtle is made up of 60 different bones all connected together.
  • Turtles have good eyesight and an excellent sense of smell. Hearing and sense of touch are both good and even the shell contains nerve endings.

and

  • Tortoise mostly stay on land whereas turtles swim in the water.
  • Tortoise have a huge dome shaped heavy shells while turtles have a flat, light shell ( makes it easier to swim in the water).
  •  Tortoise have bent feet and Turtles have webbed feet.
  • Tortoise are vegetarians and the Turtles are Omnivores. Tortoises can live up to 150 years where as turtles have a smaller life span of 80 years.

Okeyyy, enough for today's knowledge , lets focus on something important that we would like to update y'll.

Phone Recycling Process - We see it as “Recycle”, Turtles see it as “Reborn”

Hi people,

Thank you for following our post! After knowing the reason we are organizing the phone recycling campaign and how does it save turtles, today we are going to share about the phone recycling process.

Recycling Process

Manual dismantling of old mobile phones

Sorting of components

Crushing of circuit boards and sieving

Ferrous metal separation

Hammer mill and electrostatic separation to get  fibrous powder and  metal powder

Chemical process to extract gold and melt them into gold bar

Raw Material Gained After Recycling Process

§  Plastic: Plastic is largely used on the covers and external parts of a mobile device. They are turned into plastic pallets to be used in warehousing.

§  Stainless Steel: This is used on external detailing phone covers and some internal components. It can be recycled and used again in all sorts of products from mobile devices, to kitchen kettles, ovens and in bicycle frames.

§  Copper: Copper is used in a mobile phone’s circuitry and printed wiring boards. It can be recycled into copper pipes or to make musical instruments.

§  Gold: Small amounts of gold are used in a mobile phone to coat connectors and electrical surfaces. It can be recycled and used again in other mobile and electronic devices, dental fillings or to make jewellery.

§  Platinum: This is used in the electrical components of a mobile phones. It can be reclaimed and used in catalytic convertors for passenger cars, for equipment, dental filling or in jewellery.

§  Cobalt and lithium salt: These rare earth metals are recovered from recycled batteries and are re-made into lithium ion batteries.

Is that too complicated for you? Well, take it easy.
What we have to do is only a simple three-step work.

First - Get over your phone
We need your kind assistance to check if you have any unused/unwanted/malfunction phones. Give us a hand by asking your family members as well. Your friends might have what we want!
Second - Backup your memories
Do not make yourselves in trouble. Always remember to back up the necessary contacts from your phone. You are encouraged to reset your unused phone before you recycle them too.
Third - Find a nearest recycling point
Just spot the nearest recycling point to you to offer your help. You may approach to Nokia Priority or TAR UC during our events.

Importance of Phone Recycling – Life of a turtle

Seeing through the aquarium, a transparent reservoir where the huge turtles swim freely inside, it inspired me to think if I could be the bulky but lovely sea turtles, it will very exciting. I doubt people envy about me when I am swimming freely with in my own “territory”.

I guess the moment I hatch out from the egg shell, I have no other choice but to flop like a fish flopping towards the sea, even I have only four short fins. The cruel scene is always there; seabirds will attack and swallow my sibling, the people maybe there to witness the so called “precious” scene, of course, we cannot deny the fact that people are stealing the turtle eggs too. I had to hide under a huge coral, again staring at those hateful predators who are torturing the small turtles.

Nobody cares what I am eating; most probably some dead fish smell jelly fish. I thought I can swim freely, but I was dragged by the heavy shell. Days after days, I found that I can actually attack prey instantly, straight to the point. Accumulation of body fat and nutrition made my shell grew up, and I became stronger. I certainly do not know the specific waters in the patch, but I'm going forward with the warm. I met a lot of turtles and joined their team. I do not know how long it took until we see a large coral reef, maybe there will be our paradise. I swim in the coral reefs and enjoy the sun penetrate a plume of shallow water.

The contaminated waters make us suffered a lot, and soon there will be companions eating human garbage and killed. I live with fear all day, failed to find enough food, but I still hung in there.  I'm tired of every moment now. The tiredness leads me to climb to the shore. I saw few human beings seem very cheerful, once the big turtle moved out; they took away most of the eggs, and sped away. I looked at this shocking scene, trying to crawl back into the sea.  Unfortunately I attracted the human attention, so I was caught by humans too.
Imagine if you are staying in the same environment.

The food I eat was contributed by you. Please stop feeding me such chewy "food".

The day comes when I saw a girl come to visit us. I felt her eyes did not seem strange, but compassion and I immediately noticed her in time. Oops, it was me who write the story then. Imagination to be the turtle disappeared and I need to rush back for my coming event, “Connect to Conserve”.

Undeniable, we will not understand how the turtles suffer for the past few decades until we put ourselves in their shoes. The examples given again urge the importance of recycling the waste, just start practicing about the recycling concept and we can make a better tomorrow for the turtles. Let us start by recycling the old and unused phones! Before we come to the end, have a look on how what we can get when a phone is recycled.

Another warm reminder, find out more information at https://www.facebook.com/connecttoconserve?skip_nax_wizard=true

Mobile Phones Everyone? Absolutely not for the Blue

Phones. Mobile Phones. I uses one so do you and the same for everyone or even have a second one compared to anyone of us. Funny how many of us changes phones throughout our life without having a second thought on what can we do with the-now-ex-phone. Those that are still usable, yes, sell it out for a lower price but what about those that are no longer functioning? Ever wonder?

Those mobile phones that are forgotten and not being disposed correctly might have not do just for the nature and in our view, most importantly the sea leading to the sea turtles. How? Let us first take a glance at the components that made our mobile phones and how this can lead to the path of extinction for sea turtles.

Can You Live Without Mobile Phone?

Mobile phones have become a crucial part in our daily life nowadays. In the modern era now, everyone owns a mobile phone. With mobile phone, it is easy to communicate with other people and portable. However the mobile phones we see today did not look like this in the earlier days, instead they were something totally different, something you would not even think having it around or using it.

Improved technology has made a great change in the history of mobile phones, transforming the huge brick-like mobile phones of 1995 to sleek and stylish smartphones we carry with us now. Let’s take a ride back to the past and look at how cellphones has developed from the bulky walkies-talkie size to today’s swipe-savvy descendants.

Mobile phones became a little more defined and better looking than how they were before. Antennas were shortened and the designs modified; the features were also upgraded.
Nokia 9000 which was one of the most popular phones in 1996. Mobile phones became a little more defined and better looking than how they were before. Antennas were shortened and the designs modified; the features were also upgraded.

No one could have imagined that in a mere 17 years, mobile phones could have made the leap from just being the alternative to landlines to becoming a computer, GPS, radio and our lifeline to the Internet, and still be able to fit in your pocket.
Nokia Lumia 800, runs on the Windows 7 Mobile Edition OS introduced in 2012. No one could have imagined that in a mere 17 years, mobile phones could have made the leap from just being the alternative to landlines to become a computer, GPS, radio and our lifeline to the Internet, and still be able to fit in your pocket.

The evolution of mobile phones has bring us much fun. Other than making phone calls, the mobile phone now act like a small computer by granting world-wide-web gain access. The entire basic mobile phone itself have the calendar, reminder and the alarm options where we can schedule our works. It will help you to stay connected with the people far away and owning the diverse multi-function functionality, it replaced a number of other devices effortlessly. This includes granted method to service providers to supply numerous world-wide-web expert services. Mobile or portable banking and sharing tweets are going towards common extramarital relationship with the phone person. Mobile phone devices are however a new type of affirmation to a lot; this depends upon the phone people order.

In the same time, people tend to change their phones either due to it is not working anymore or keep themselves up-to-date. Question is, where did the old phones went to? Most of the people do not acknowledge that their old or spoiled mobiles can actually be recycled instead of keeping it at home or throwing them into the dustbin. Estimation there's only 10% of unwanted cell phones are recycled each year.

Look at the video below: Over 260 million cell phone users (85% of the population) in U.S. alone with nearly 1 Billion currently in retirement.

Give your old mobile a new life. Due to their small size and rapid replacement cycle, cell phones are more likely to end up in the waste stream and contribute a growing portion of the toxic materials that end up in our landfills.

You definitely will not want to miss the “Connect To Conserve” campaign,  who presents you the “Nokia Factory” exhibition booth by showing you the process of phone recycling.  Have no platform to recycle your old mobiles?
