Mission Accomplished!
Finally it has come to the end of Connect2Conserve Challenge where our Dean of Faculty of Social Science, Arts and Humanities, Mr. Lee Hwee Chuin as well as Programme Leader of Faculty of Social Science, Arts and Humanities, Mr. Chuan Tek Pheung transformed into 'Old-Aged Mutant Ninja Turtle', by wearing the turtle shell all day long after hitting the target of 400 phones and 288 phones during the 3 days Connect2Conserve campaign.
Does our Dean of Faculty of Social Science, Arts and Humanities, Mr. Lee Hwee Chuin looks incredibly adorable with the turtle shell? |

From 0 to 1001
From 0 to 1001, it is not just a figure but it is the process, the process of how the sea armies run the connect 2 conserve campaign which required to collect the unwanted or spoiled mobile phones to save turtles and from 0 phones collected to successfully achieved 1001 unwanted phones for the campaign.
1001 such a big figure of amount phones collected, it is a breaking record. A record that advanced diploma students achieved for the first time in the college.
Let's have some flashback for the campaign, from pre-event hard work to closing ceremony of the campaign. It is like a journey for students to learned to be in a team, start the teamwork that assigned, learned to run the campaign, believe and follow leader instruction, learned to communicate with a group of people who from different classes, learned to have time management to assigned job task and respect others hard work. All these are done by a team, we get succeed because of the team work although there is always have some argument during the process but still we get through it.

It's NOT end yet!!
Throughout
the past one month, the sea armies have been working hard and staying back till late night. All these have built up every single detail, such as the exhibition booths information and designs, the turtle
shells, the costume for Poseidon and etc that made up the whole successful campaign.
During the dismantle session on the last day of event, everything, including
the hard works, seemed to be brushed off together with all the props and
exhibition materials.

Closing of Connect2Conserve!
Closing Ceremony:
Connect2Conserve Campaign had come
to the last day where a lot of crowds have gathered for the important closing
ceremony. At 4.30p.m, the ceremony had started off with the announcement of
winners for the “Guess the Egg” who will walk away with premium set of Nokia’s
merchandises. Mr Lee Hwee Chuin, the Head of School of Social Science, Arts and
Humanities was invited onto the stage to present the prizes to the winners.
Before that, the eggs in the box were counted by Mr Lee and it turned out to be
136 eggs inside the box. There were a total of 18 winners who are lucky enough
to guess the right amount.

"The Final Sprint" of the campaign
Today is the last day for Connect to Conserve campaign. From my observation and research, I found that some of the sea armies are worried about the target of the recycled phone either can achieve or not. It's already making them feel nerve and keep asking their friends to recycle/donate old phones.
Besides that, some of them are also confused about how the closing ceremony runs. So, we are having the briefing and rehearsal about the closing ceremony before the campaign start.
The Poseidon are practice his own script; One of the sea armies are caring the DSLR in order to shoot the nice photo during the closing ceremony; One of the sea armies are stand on the stage and trying to find the right place for the VIP and winners of the lucky draw and game's booth.

Continue on Day 2 Connect2Conserve Campaign
The WWF managed to get pledges from the public so that sea turtles can be saved. The small puzzle pieces slowly to form a big picture where it symbolizes small effort by each person, big difference can be made! The public able to get a lot of information from WWF about conservation projects that they done and what they can do to contribute to this conservation project. The public were delighted as they got chance to help the helpless sea turtles to live a normal life.
Near completion, good job Tarucian!
Day 2 of Connect2Conserve Campaign
Campaign was come to the second day and it is last for another day to end up. Nevertheless, all the committee members of campaign are trying out all their best to collect as much phones as they can in order to save sea turtle. Besides, one thing to catch up my mind in this morning is I realized a lot TARC students came to visit our event. Some of them were come by themselves but some were come in small groups. In addition, several fun and creative games are prepared to make the campaign more attractive. With this, fish the waste is a famous game between other than that. Participate students are enjoying the game and paying attention while our committee member is explaining.
Participants are enjoying the first station game which is fish and waste. They act like back to childhood while involve in the game. |
Other
than that, we would like to take this opportunity to share a good new with
everyone which is our pledge form already collected 4309 signature from
pre-event until today. So excited to hear that and really appreciate for those
is a past to help us to achieve this goal to amend Malaysia law prohibit to
consume and selling turtle eggs. In such situation, I would like to say a DEEP
THANK YOU to everyoneJ

A Good Starting Point For Our 1st Day Campaign..
Today was our ‘big’
day, the actual campaign day. I feel very nervous but also look forward to our
campaign. Luckily, for the first day campaign overall was good and considered going
smooth. It shows a good participation of the students and also the college staff in this campaign.
We totally have 7 informative booths which
were ‘When
Connection Happens, “SEE” Turtle, Mini cinema, Almost After Earth, WWF-Pledge
to save sea turtle, 3D
Phone Recycling Factory, Transphoner and the Photo
Booth’. These booths were well educating the public and let
them more understand about the phone process and also the living ways of turtle.
You can learn about the phone knowledge such as the introduction of Nokia’s
phone, how the phone being emerges and how it going to be recycles. You also can get
closer and find out more about the turtle in Malaysia such as the 4 species turtle
that living in our country and also learnt the ways to protect the turtle that
almost been extinction.
Launching Ceremony of Connect 2 Conserve - Day 1

After a few weeks of the preparation job, a big day for Connect 2 Conserve will be coming soon, and there is only 4 hours left before our launching ceremony. Committee are nervous yet excited for the presentation of all our hard work on the actual event day at TARUC college hall. Connect 2 Conserve Committee had prepared a few giant turtle which developed a concept of the turtle generation.
The stage design will be according to the concept of the turtle generation, which is a mother sea turtle and a baby sea turtle. The process of hanging the sea turtle on the stage not only time consuming, but also require a lot of man power in order to make it perfect during the event.
The project of the giant sea turtle will not be the only eye-sight focus point in the event, in this event, you able to see the 3D phone recycle factory that made by recycle item and it is clearly shown that the actual step for the phone recycling process.
As in the photo, 3D factory will be appear just in front of you, and I am sure you can have a full picture of the recycling process in your mind after visiting this booth!

Throw or Recycle?
There are a lot of people who have no idea WHAT TO DO with their unwanted or old phone. Then i am sure you must be thinking about – What could be done with your unwanted mobile phone? To THROW or RECYCLE?
The Connect 2 Conserve campaign gives you a chance to recycle your old and unwanted phones. Well, now you can do better other than throwing away your mobile phones. Nokia’s Southeast Asia Pacific Sustainability Division is donating 1USD to WWF for their turtle conservation project for each mobile phone you recycle.

A 'Little' Sea Army's Perspective
Being in a little shoe of a Sea Army creates experience you will never
have when you leave Uni College life. This was what I was today as a Sea
Army going around promoting our Connect2Conserve campaign - Very glad
about. And excited too.
THE BEGINNING OF TGIF
The beginning of the day started out well because right before we headed for our first Hall 2 Hall announcement, we had a group of Media Studies students' who came up to us to asked us for our picture as they needed it for their assignment. We were glad they approached us. It happened coincidentally actually, we were getting ready and suddenly they approached us out of thin air. Guess both sides were lucky in terms of supporting.

With the Students of Media Studies
We proceeded with the Hall 2 Hall announcement. As I had been busy preparing the write-ups for the team with my group, I did not get the chance to go for the Hall 2 Hall announcement as frequent. Therefore, I was excited. The best part of this 'journey' with Poseidon and the Sea Armies is - The crowd gives you great feedback. Students' are attentive when it comes Poseidon walking into the hall. Even the lecturers are amazed of the outfit we created and asked me WHY? I was also asked - How we made the shell?
One of the lecture hall the Sea Army visited
We managed to cover a lot of lecture halls in about 4 to 5 hours straight. We were going around each hall collecting pledges from students and lecturers to continue the conservation effort on sea turtles. It is not difficult to explain and asked them for their signature to continue supporting this effort - It is rather easy that we have an amount of students' who can and would support not only our campaign but at the same time to be in-support of WWF-Malaysia.
A Good Visitation
One thing I notice about the students' - All they want to know is HOW can they win the Nokia Lumia 920 & 820. Some even asked if they could win an Iphone 5. There were a couple of teasing going around for Nigel as the Poseidon. I am not sure if that is a positive or a negative thing but what I can say it that we have been receiving good feed-backs and even the turtle mobile car has been going well as a lot of them notice the car - Everywhere.
Overall, it has been an experience I would like to have again - Don't think I'll get the chance in college though but in the corporate world - IT'S A DEFINITE. Therefore, before signing off - I would like to thank Ms Lim who has been a good adviser to the group and of course to my External Relations team. She has been there to guide the whole team closely while giving us the advice and idea we can learn from. It has not been easy for her but she continues to guide and support us with all the time she has for this team. I can never forget the guidance she provides us as her students of TARUC :)
Signing Off. . . Goodnight !

THROUGH POSEIDON'S VISION "CONNECT 2 CONSERVE" MASCOT
Oh oh oh oh My...I am LATEEEEE!!! :)
Well, Connect 2 Conserve campaign is getting closer and closer, it is just a week away!! Throughout this week, the publicity for our campaign has been going on around college.
Just so that everyone knows, one of the role that I play in this campaign is to wear the Poseidon costume. My task is to give out the announcement of the campaign to lecture halls throughout the college on the daily basis.
Here is the team that was with me yesterday in our quest to spread the news about our campaign. They are very active and believe, me, they are active!!
When I was given the task of being Poseidon, i thought it would be easy, but believe me, i never though it was so hard! Eventually, i gotten the hang on it and now i actually enjoy playing this role even though its tiring but its fun!
Most of the comments i receive from the students is that I am cute. No i am not making this up, in fact, if you check with the team that supports me in the lecture hall announcements, you will know that there were some cute looking girls took pictures with me. HAH!
This was the photo taken during the announcement to the Diploma in Accounting students. That is me holding the trident :)
I was explaining to the enginnering students on the turtle being endangered and about Connect 2 Conserve campaign.
From the back view, its cool to look the Slogan of our event " A PHONE RECYCLED, A FUTURE FOR TURTLE" in separate boards in the front and of course, our campaign logo!
Our cute little turtle girl going around and getting students to sign pledge forms :)
We receive comments that the girls in turtle shell looks cute. HAHAHA!!!
Oh no!! look at the time,I"M LATE AGAIN!!! I need to go costume up for the Hall 2 Hall announcement. Overall, i can say, we reached out to many students, and we did make an impact and we hope, they can join in our cause to save the turtle!!
Poseidon - Peace Out!!

The story behind the Sea Armies' work force

Why eat turtle? Why save turtle?
When we are in childhood, we always ask why when parents or adults ask us don't do this and don't do that.
Same goes to the topic today, why can't we eat turtle? And what actually turtle makes a different with others meat and makes people so interested to taste it?

You must be wondering...
Have you ever wondered how deep can a turtle dive? How fast can it crawl? Or how sturdy their shells are? Well, look no further as here are the answers to your queries:
While sadly no longer found in Malaysia, let's use the leatherback turtle as an example here. The leatherback turtle can dive to great depths, as recorded by researchers who have equipped them with depth recorders. Leatherbacks have been recorded to dive over 1000 meters deep, which exceeds that reported of any air-breathing vertebrates with the possible exceptions of elephant seals and sperm whales. The shallowest dive depth occur at dusk and the deepest depth at dawn. This is probably due to the feeding of jellyfish that concentrates below 600 meters during the day and which moves into the surface around dusk. The leatherbacks dive almost continuously with only brief intervals at the surface for air.
A study in 2008 shows that during the daylight hours, diving depths of two adult green turtles was shallow, around 1 - 4 meters. Researchers assume that the turtles were deliberately moving towards their destinations during this time. Between 7 - 8pm, the turtles began a diving pattern consisting of deep dives with a mean maximum depth of 35 - 55 meters. The shallow diurnal diving begins between 6 - 7am, after the nocturnal deep-diving patterns end. The adult female observed by researches made two dives in excess of 135 meters, and one male made several dives in excess of 100 meters. These are the deepest dives ever recorded for a naturally diving green turtle.
Impressive, aren't they? Well, as for how fast a turtle can crawl, I leave it to your judgement with this video (Do note that they are only baby turtles, and adult turtles can crawl much faster):
Enough about their speed. Now on to the last question, which is how sturdy a turtle's shell can be. Well, a turtle's shell can be important in several ways. A turtle's shell is able to protect the turtle from predators, and the shells of some turtles are so thick and strong that it can resist the bite of a large crocodile.
Other turtles, such as Asian river turtles, often dive very deeply, where the water pressure is severe enough to crush their lungs if it wasn't for their shells. For turtles that live in very dry places, their shell provides a shield from the sun that helps the turtle from drying out too much. So, in a sense, a turtle's shell is a Kevlar vest with a built in air-conditioner.

Frank the photographer's first attempt at following a diving leatherback before giving up at 5 meters and surfacing for sweet, sweet air.

Frank second attempt at following a diving green, but plays it safe by keeping at only 2 meters. Nice going, Frank.
Impressive, aren't they? Well, as for how fast a turtle can crawl, I leave it to your judgement with this video (Do note that they are only baby turtles, and adult turtles can crawl much faster):
Frank tried to follow the turtles by going down on all fours. Sadly, we all know how that ended and here's a YouTube video instead. Way to go, Frank.
Not to be outdone by turtles, Frank volunteered to take a picture of an adult crocodile. Frank disappeared into the wilds and was never seen again. We will miss you, Frank.
Here's a picture of a Kevlar. Imagine it with a built in air-conditioner. How Frank must wish he had one of these before he went into the wilds shooting crocodiles.
While a turtle may seem awesome with all these capabilities, know that they are not immortal, and are still declining in numbers due to humans. So, let us all work together in preserving these magnificent creatures for our future generations to be awed.

What happens to the environment if turtles became extinct?
All living creatures have a role to play in the environment. Turtles are no different and among the roles they play are as follow:
1. Turtles are important as scavengers, herbivores, carnivores and often contribute significant biomass to ecosystems. They break down the energy of plant materials and convert them into protein.
2. Green turtles feed on seagrasses and seaweeds
that grow on the ocean floor. These seagrasses are home to other marine life
such as seahorses and also serve as breeding ground for fishes. However, they
must be kept short to remain healthy and this is where the turtles come in. If
turtles were to ever go extinct, seagrasses would eventually die off and this
would in turn affect the marine life and eventually human life as well.
3. Beaches have a very fragile ecosystem in that
they don’t get many sources of nutrients hence there is very little vegetation.
Sea turtles help support this ecosystem when they nest. Reason being, of the
tens of thousands of eggs that are deposited by the turtles, not all will
hatch. Those that do not hatch will decay and nourish the beaches. With
declining turtle population, fewer eggs are deposited and this would result in
lesser vegetation and this would cause beach erosion.
4. Eggs and hatchlings are by far the most
predator-vulnerable life history stages. Eggs are often eaten by semi-aquatic
and terrestrial dwellers. Hatchlings fall prey to fishes, lizards, snakes,
crocodilians and birds. As the population decreases there will be impact on the
marine life that feed on it and in the long term result in less diversity in
the marine life.
Start to save, before it's too late.

Save The Turtles
Words can’t describe how
I feel about the preparations for the conservation of turtles.
We are able to wear masks
to avoid breathing in harmful air when haze is everywhere.
But!
How about when the turtles
are facing sea pollution?
Are they able to wear
masks to protect themselves?
who is going to help turtle to identify that those plastic thrown into sea are not foods for them? |
Well, below are few
basic actions to protect our sea treasures:
Remove Litter
Most of the plastics in
our ocean are mainly from the land. So, please do not hesitate to join any
clean-up programs to reduce the impact to sea turtle.
Educate The Next
Generation
You can bring your kids
and families to local parks which often host events with activities about the ocean
and turtles.
Make Turtle as Theme
Make your party
meaningful by sharing turtle conservation information to everyone instead of
hosting a traditional party. Let’s make your party meaningful!
Be Environment Friendly
You can save a turtle in
your daily activities. Be a smart person; choose environmental friendly
household products to reduce environment pollution. Re-use, re-use and re-use
before tagging any item as a rubbish.

When the wind is about to blow...
Frankly speaking, i was having a big problem on recognizing things that looked similar when i was young, so i cant differentiate between turtle and tortoise. They both belong to the same family of reptiles called Testudines!
I still remembered my dad brought me to zoo and I literally looked at a tortoise but shouted out loud saying :" Pa, next time we need no travel to Terengganu to look for turtle, we can come to zoo!"
And, the awkward moment slices in the atmosphere...
Trust me, I'm assure you that at least more than 50% of the people out there could not recognize them as well, but no worries, it is always good to learn new things in your life. Let me share some interesting facts about them!
DID YOU KNOW?
and
Okeyyy, enough for today's knowledge , lets focus on something important that we would like to update y'll.
Yes, it is the time for SEA ARMIES to prepare their armors before going for the war!
So, after Miss Lim's lecture class, we settled ourselves at TARUC sport complex and started doing all the props need during pre-event.
We literally conquered the sport complex hallway and settled down at there- LIKE A BOSS
The beginning is always the hardest, but not bad huh, at least the shape is out! Good job mates!
Spot something like this in college campus and it is time to crack your head on what is going to happen next!
Who said sewing skill is only belongs to woman? Advance Diploma in Public Relations is now proudly presents to you - MEN OF SEW ! It is just as sexy as man who cooks. For reserving good man like them, please bring at your spoiled handphone and come over to redeem them from 10-12 July 2013 @ College Hall, we have all you want =)

DID YOU KNOW?
- Turtles have been on the earth for more than 200 million years. They evolved before mammals, birds, crocodiles, snakes and even lizards.
- The earliest turtles had teeth and could not retract their heads, but other than this, modern turtles are very similar to their original ancestors.
- The shell of a turtle is made up of 60 different bones all connected together.
- Turtles have good eyesight and an excellent sense of smell. Hearing and sense of touch are both good and even the shell contains nerve endings.
and
- Tortoise mostly stay on land whereas turtles swim in the water.
- Tortoise have a huge dome shaped heavy shells while turtles have a flat, light shell ( makes it easier to swim in the water).

Phone Recycling Process - We see it as “Recycle”, Turtles see it as “Reborn”
Hi people,
Thank you for following our post! After knowing the reason we are
organizing the phone recycling campaign and how does it save turtles, today we
are going to share about the phone recycling process.
Recycling Process
Manual dismantling of old mobile phones
Sorting of components
Crushing of circuit boards and sieving
Ferrous metal separation
Hammer mill and electrostatic separation to get fibrous powder and metal powder
Chemical process to extract gold and melt them into gold bar
Raw Material Gained
After Recycling Process
§ Plastic: Plastic is largely used on the covers and external parts of a
mobile device. They are turned into plastic pallets to be used in warehousing.
§ Stainless Steel: This is used on external detailing phone covers and some
internal components. It can be recycled and used again in all sorts of products
from mobile devices, to kitchen kettles, ovens and in bicycle frames.
§ Copper: Copper is used in a mobile phone’s circuitry and printed wiring
boards. It can be recycled into copper pipes or to make musical instruments.
§ Gold: Small amounts of gold are used in a mobile phone to coat
connectors and electrical surfaces. It can be recycled and used again in other
mobile and electronic devices, dental fillings or to make jewellery.
§ Platinum: This is used in the electrical components of a mobile phones.
It can be reclaimed and used in catalytic convertors for passenger cars, for
equipment, dental filling or in jewellery.
§ Cobalt and lithium
salt: These rare earth metals are recovered from
recycled batteries and are re-made into lithium ion batteries.
Is that too complicated for you? Well,
take it easy.
What we have to do is only a simple three-step work.
First - Get over your phone
We need your kind assistance to check if you have any
unused/unwanted/malfunction phones. Give us a hand by asking your family
members as well. Your friends might have what we want!
Second - Backup your memories
Do not make yourselves in trouble. Always remember to back up
the necessary contacts from your phone. You are encouraged to reset your unused
phone before you recycle them too.
Third - Find a nearest recycling point
Just spot the nearest recycling point to you to offer your help.
You may approach to Nokia Priority or TAR UC during our events.
